The FUE Hair Transplant Methods
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), sometimes referred to as follicular transfer (FT), is one of two principal methods of obtaining follicular units. Follicular units are naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs that are used for hair transplantation procedures. FUE hair transplant methods are popular in the United States and around the world, as they can offer patients pros compared to the Strip Method (FUT), depending on their expectations and goals.
FUE is commonly used as an alternative to FUT, when the scalp may be too tight for a strip excision. The FUE method also allows the surgeon to harvest the finer hair from the nape of the neck. These hair grafts are frequently used around the frontal hairline or even for a facial hair transplant, usually the eyebrows.
Although for many patients, follicular unit extraction may provide the greatest results, this is not always the case. For example, the follicles are harvested from a much larger donor area than with a FUT procedure. As a result, donor site scars may become visible over time and the hair in the donor area may become more sparsely covered. In addition, the maximum graft yield and hair retention rate is generally is lower than with the FUT procedure. FUE hair transplants also take longer to perform and therefore can have a higher price tag.
Post-transplant procedure, one of the benefits of FUE is that patients generally experience a slightly faster recovery time and can resume normal activities quickly. In addition, patients report reduced post-operative discomfort versus the FUT method.
